Summary/Abstract: The article traces the origins and the principles of the Vilnius Philomath Society, and discusses the status of linguistic investigations into the manuscripts and printed legacy of the Philomaths, understood both as a group and as individual members. Literature overview shows that despite numerous suggestions made over the years to launch research on the language of the Philomaths, the only studies available focus on isolated aspects of their language and style (mostly correspondence), and the only systematic explorations of the linguistic system of Philomaths’ texts are the studies by Z. Kurzowa. The digital edition of the archives that is currently under construction is likely to provide impetus for research interest in the linguistic legacy of the Philomaths and might bring forth analyses of their idiolects and idiostyles. The second part of the paper discusses the content, objectives and mode of operation of this new digital resource.
