Summary/Abstract: This article identifies main segments within the hotel business and outlines how these segments are shaped by the preferences of their clientele. The authors discuss three main market segments, namely leisure travel, business travel and cultural travel. The main segment in modern tourism is leisure travel and specifically vacation. Developments in this sector led to the establishment of resorts which offer specific types of services. The second largest segment is business travel represented by hotels targeted at business travelers as well as conferences. This sector is currently very profitable. Lastly, cultural travel being more diverse and focused mainly around cities led to the developments of specific hotel services. Changes in the XXI century travel market impact the hotel industry in all of these segments.
