Summary/Abstract: In this article the author tries to show the sociological and cultural reasons of such popularity of Janusz L. Wiśniewski’s novel „Loneliness In the Web”. He claims, that the main reasons of success were not the literary criteria (Wiśniewski used the conservative model of narration, typical of classical realistic love story, joined with autobiographical context), but mainly the components referring to autobiographical and cultural aspects: the ability to satisfy readers` emotional needs, in the context of their life experiences and expectations (the concept of identification, counseling narration and therapeutic function), the ability to reflect social moods (the expression of fascination with the Web, the image of social changes in Poland after 1989 transformation) and placing the work in basic and fixed mental schemes (referring to stereotypes, conservatism of views and clear legitimation of dominant social discourses).
