Summary/Abstract: Albania as a country in transition has undergone major changes over the last twenty years. In terms of the financial system many important economic reforms have been implemented. The banking system plays a very important role in the real economy of a country. The process for crediting the economy has influenced the economic growth and investment in the country. The Albanian banking system has marked a lot of development and major changes; especially after years 2000. The activity of crediting culminated in 2008 with an increase in the stock of loans to 46.77% compared with the same period a year ago. After this year; as a result of the financial crisis that impacted all countries in the world; in Albania lending from banks decreased and the ratio of credit growth in 2009 compared to 2008 dropped to 14.15 per cent. Since this year; the rate of credit growth has declined until 2013; year in which we have the first fall of the decrease of stock of loans with -1.1 percent. In 2014 the trend reversed with an increase of credit growth to 4.85 percent. Risk management process is very important in the process of lending. The purpose of this paper is to identify what are the factors that led to the increase of credit risk. Another purpose of this paper is to identify which of these factors has contributed more to the growth of credit risk and what measures should be taken in order to reduce it. The methodology used in this paper includes the literature review; analysis of the real situation in the country; as well as graphical; factorial and statistical analysis. The results of this paper are useful for banks; supervisory institutions involved in policy making process.
