Summary/Abstract: The article is a brief review of the Polish prose for young readers in the last half century. The review covers the historical, adventure, social and psychological novels, fairy tales and modern fantasy tales. The article contains remarks on conditions of development of this kind of literature and research problems connected with it. History of children and youth literature should be divided into two periods: years 1956–1980 and years after 1980. The existing trends and tendencies not only have artistic background but are also politically and socially conditioned. The presented outline of the development of this kind of prose enumerates important books and their reception, including translations, and mentions centres for research on, and popularization of children and youth literature.
