Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to verify what communication roles the learner of Polish as a foreign language plays in improving listening skills (and in which communication systems). The author, referring to the concepts of Michel Rost and Denis McQuail, analyzes teaching tasks and correlated texts present in three selected coursebooks for A2 level. The research shows that the teaching tasks do little to prepare learners for authentic listening in natural communicative contexts: students play little differentiated roles in only two systems. In the author’s view, listening instruction should be consciously and deliberately planned for the sake of authenticity and functionalism in PFL teaching.
