Summary/Abstract: This study provides a short history of the Romanian feuilleton, seen as a specific means of expression of serial culture (“seriality” which will later take the shape of radio dramas, telenovelas, soap operas). Our hypotheses are that: 1. the birth of the Romanian feuilleton came from necessity, because political news were met with limited interest, and 2. the feuilleton was, in the Romanian press, regardless of its main theme, a non-political text, most of the times of a fictional nature. The study includes references on the stands taken by two personalities representative of Romanian culture, Alexandru Vlahuţă and Mircea Eliade, the latter praising feuilletons as a useful practice for the writers to be. Communist journalist Sergiu Fărcăşan thought the main function of the feuilleton was to sanction deviance, and equated feuilletons and pamphlet.
