Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the scope of duties of a district doctor in Poland immediate-ly after World War II. The analysis focuses on the legislation governing the activity of local government administration in the matter of health care within the area its jurisdiction. Some everyday problems that a district doctor had to deal with are exemplified by desk officers who worked in the Middle Oder Region. The article discusses the issues of district doctor’s multi-jobbing and overwork, organisation of health service structures in the areas where they worked as well as their dealings with local institutions. The role of district doctor was eliminated together with District Starosties in 1950.
