Summary/Abstract: Information literacy lies at the heart of lifelong learning and is a prerequisite for effective participation in an information society. This article discusses the level of information literacy skills observed among Polish secondary school students, based on the example of two secondary schools in Toruń, with the information literacy of the study population identified and characterised using the SCONUL Seven Pillars of Information Literacy model, and also compared with the students' self-assessment of their information skills and knowledge. The majority of students were classified as competent, having mastered information skills to a satisfactory degree in most of the pillars analysed, although competency areas in need of educational efforts were also identified.
