Summary/Abstract: Domestic violence is a special form of violence that violates the rights to life, freedom, physical, psychological and sexual integrity, security and human dignity of a family member. It can happen to anyone, regardless of education, age, gender or any other characteristic. Domestic violence is not only a widespread social problem that harms individuals, families and society as a whole, it is also a criminal act. As such, it requires not only decisive social condemnation and prevention activities, but also unrelenting social disapproval and an equally strong response from the justice system. In accordance with the Convention on Suppressing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence recently adopted by the Council of Europe, domestic violence refers to "any act of physical, sexual, psychological or economic violence that occurs in the family or family community, or between former or current spouses or partners, regardless of whether the perpetrator shares or has shared the same residence as the victim."
