Summary/Abstract: The syntactic or semantic analytical approach to the text, if one suppresses the other one, cannot be of use in the study of literary historical changes. Both procedures are essentially ahistorical and painting to universals, defining some more or less permanent features of the enunciatory or thematic structure of literary discourse. The theory of the possible worlds ensures the ontological status of the literary text and provides a fIrm methodological basis for its semantic analysis. It enables us to detect a dividing line between the semantic units inherent in the text (meaning) and those belonging to the interpreter's space (signifIcance). This difference is the basis of semantic analysis and the pre-condition for a historic approach to the literary sequence. By connecting the text and the historical world of the writer or the reader, the way has been opened to the diachronic study of literature.
