Summary/Abstract: On premises of the concentration camps Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II and Auschwitz III (Buna-Werke), as well as in the subcamps built near mines and ironworks, apart from prisoners there also worked civilian labourers. They came from occupied countries (mostly Poland), Germany, and allied countries of the Third Reich. They were both specialistsand unqualified workers, some of them also sent by private companies that had signed relevant contracts with the concentration camp. They were quartered in dwelling camps (Gemeinschaftslager). They differed visually form prisoners with their attire that included the informative element of an armband with an identification number and a place of employment. They carried special passes with which they were obliged to prove their identity in the camps. They had to follow the rules of labor that emphasized the limited contact with prisoners (only professional matters) and to keep everything they say and hear during work in secret.
