Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyse a specifically Japanese type of poem, namely the haiku poem, based on the way it can be so adaptable not only to other cultures, but to various personalities of its authors, resulting in distinct styles. While we can consider the haiku poem to be too small and too much bound by rules to be creative with it, we can be surprised at the rich variety of such poems, next to its depth of meanings, which can be drawn based on concrete reality elements, starting from free associations as in psychoanalysis. We put together the key elements present in the haiku poems and arrive, as its readers, to unexpected, deep, abstract, philosophical meanings. The author of the present paper will analyse from the point of view of reader response criticism, based on her own experience with the haiku community led by Corneliu Traian Atanasiu, a selection of his poems. She will also rely on her knowledge of Japanese culture mindset and traditions. It can be surprising to see how, from concrete, literal images present in haiku poems we can build philosophical, deep meaning.
