Greeting as the main phatic tool for establishing verbal contact

Summary/Abstract: Salutation serves to implement the phatic function of language and occupies an extremely important place in the process of communication. In dialogical interaction, it is considered one of the conventional means of successfully starting speech contact. The article highlights two main phatic situations in which different intentions of the speaker are noted at the beginning of verbal communication. The first situation is related to the use of salutation to maintain friendly relations with the interlocutor. In the second situation, the salutation at the beginning of speech interaction performs both an etiquette function and the function of attracting the attention of the addressee, as well as for starting a conversation with the interlocutor, since it is immediately followed by a phrase that initiates the motive of communication.
