Summary/Abstract: During the Bulgarian Revival, the dominant form of health care was folk medicine. It combines within itself complex knowledge to deal with health problems in people, accumulated over time and passed down through the generations. From the beginning of the 19th century, under the influence of a number of factors that contribute to the gradual modernization of Bulgarian society, a new type of health culture was born. The so-called modern health knowledge is making its way into the public consciousness either through the politics of the High Gate, Bulgarian education, periodicals or books. From 1856, a conditional clash between scientific and folk medicine suddenly arose. Some of the educators, among them Bulgarian doctors, started a verbal opposition against traditional healing and made efforts to expand the health literacy of their compatriots. Although until 1878 the two main forms of health knowledge existed in parallel, it was precisely in this period that the foundations of the modern health culture were outlined among the Bulgarian population.
