Summary/Abstract: The article examine the tensions between the industrial (mining) development, on the one hand, and the ecological tourism based on nature protection and sustainable use of natural resources, on the other hand. The author address this issue studying a particular case – the local crisis in the municipality of Tran, which was caused by an intention of investment in extraction and processing of gold and silver, and an opposing local vision of touristic development based on the local natural heritage. The mining and ecotourism are examined as opposite but similar discourses for local development. Both of them utilize the natural resources and heritage and aim at the transformation of the rural landscape, promising new livelihood perspectives, a better standard of living and even possibilities for re-branding of the local identity markers.
