The Mother Tongue and the Foreign Languages of the Dobruja Germans in an Example from a Chronicle from Dobruja

Summary/Abstract: The German of the Dobruja Germans has not died out, as is often assumed, but has rather fallen into oblivion. From 1840 to 1940, it was even spoken both as a native language and as a dialect in Dobruja. Of course, it came into contact with many other languages and was influenced by them. This article presents various phenomena of language change that bear witness to the hundred-year history of the Germans in Dobruja: loanword creations, interference with Russian, Turkish, Romanian or even English, dialect and standard German, all in prose and poetry form.
