THE PRESENCE OF THE ALBANIAN ELEMENT IN THE OTTOMAN CAMPAIGN OF MALTA OF 1565

Summary/Abstract: As one of the most epical battles of 16th century, the siege of Malta was of crucial importance regarding the geopolitics and the control of Mediterranean. Thus, we possess a huge literature that gives information about different aspects of this important military event. In the light of new archival data provided from the archives, today it is possible to draw a detailed picture of the whole campaign. Even though the Albanians were not part of this battle, testimonies and other archival data regarding the campaign shows a presence of Albanian elements in both sides. In this context, the scope of this article is to give an account of Albanian presence in the siege of Malta of 1565 based on the information found in two important archival sources, such as Muhimme Defterleri (no. 5 and 6) and The 1565 Ottoman Malta Campaign Register.
