Summary/Abstract: During the second half of the XVIIth Century, a Venetian consulate was set up at Durazzo that had its jurisdiction over la scala dell’Albania that included the Albanian ports from Bar (Antivari - Tivar) to Saiada (Sajadha). At the same period, the French and the Dutch opened their consulates at Durazzo. Thus, Durazzo became a crossroads of wares from all over the Balkans. In fact, the trade authority of Cinque Savi alia Mercanzia stated that as far as it concerns the Ottoman Empire only Durazzo and Smirne (Izmir) showed very promising for the Venetian trade. After the end of the Morean War (1684-1699) and the Treaty of Carlowitz (Sremski Karlovci, 16-26 janar 1699) trade between Venice and Albania resumed and the Cinque Savi alia Mercanzia elected Giorgio Cumano (1700- 1702) as the Venetian consul of Durazzo. From the beginning of XVIIIth century, he had to face the competition of the French, Dutch and Ragusan consulates that had employed former Venetian consuls and candidates for the vacant Venetian consular post of Durazzo such as Andrea d’Andria and Nicola Pulimeno, who had become the Dutch consul of Durazzo. The competition included also the direction of the flow of goods, the relationship of the consuls with the merchants and the local authorities or the differences between Perastine and Dolcignotte (Ulqin -Ulcinj) Navigation.
