Relation Between Religious Understanding and Future Expectations in Emerging Adults: Sakarya University Example

Summary/Abstract: Emerging adulthood is a new period between youth and adulthood. The main characteristic of this period is that although individuals are considered to be of legal age, they have not yet met the criteria that determine the transition to adulthood, such as starting a regular job, starting a family and completing their education. As distinct from religiosity and religious life, religious understanding refers to mental categories that deal with how one understands religion. This study examines the relationship between emerging adults' religious understanding and future expectations. In the study, religious understanding was measured using the "Religious Understanding in Emerging Adults Scale" and future expectancy was measured with the "Future Expectancy Scales". The research was carried out according to the survey model with a quantitative research approach. The sample of the study consists of 1814 students in the age group of 18-29 who are studying at Sakarya University in the spring semester of 2022. The study was based on six categories of fields of study: engineering sciences, economic and administrative sciences, health sciences, religious sciences, educational sciences, arts and aesthetic sciences, and a convenience sampling technique was used. The research consists of introduction, methodology, findings, discussion and conclusion sections, including the theoretical background and conceptual basis. In the findings section of the study, after the demographic information, the data on the relationship between the sub-dimensions of the religious understanding scale and the relationship between the sub-dimensions of the religious understanding scale and the future expectation scales are presented in tables by looking at their correlations. The results of the correlation analysis show that the sub-dimensions of the religious understanding scale in emerging adults are related to each other, and religious understanding and future expectation are related to each other. In addition, the results of the study show that university students have a "new spiritualist" understanding of religion that is distant from the traditional-institutional understanding of religion, questions religious authorities, and emphasizes individualism. According to the findings, there is a negative and significant relationship between secular-distant religious understanding and future expectations, and a positive and significant relationship between institutional-religious and conservative-traditional religious understanding and future expectations.
