Summary/Abstract: General Radu Gherghe is best known for his career after receiving the rank of general, when he was appointed commander of the 1st Armoured Division and later participated in the fighting of World War II. Thanks to his two personal files and documents in the military archives, we have been able to reconstruct the entire career of General Radu Gherghe, starting with the rank of second lieutenant. He took part in the First World War and fell prisoner in the battles of Neajlov, being interned in camps in Bulgaria for a year and a half. On his return, he wrote a memoir describing how Romanian officers were treated in Bulgarian camps. It gives detailed accounts of how the Bulgarian camps were organized and how Romanian officers and soldiers were treated there. On his return from imprisonment, he received the rank corresponding to his seniority and continued his military career, fulfilling his duties with flying colours, reaching the rank of general. Unfortunately, he was one of the thousands of victims of the purges in the army, a consequence of the system established on 6 March 1945.
