Summary/Abstract: The needle, which is used in many areas from the clothing industry to medicine, has found a wide range of use in social life. The fact that the needle is made of steel, does not rust and has a sharp structure makes it different from other metals. In this respect, it took part in many oral expressions and had various functions. Undoubtedly, one of the narratives in which the needle is seen most often is fairy tales. The needle, used as a motif in folk literature narratives, is included under the title “D Magic” in Stith Thompson's work “Motif-Index of Folk-Literature”. The needle is basically a reflection of the iron cult. Based on this, it has been seen that iron has a wide reflection in folk literature narratives. In this article, academic studies on fairy tales were taken as basis for compilation. It has been tried to determine how and in what way the needle motif is used in tales compiled from certain parts of the Turkish world and seven regions of Anatolia. As a result of the investigations, Tatarstan, Bashkir, East Turkestan, Iran/Tabriz, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan from the Turkish world; Needle motifs have been identified and their various functions are included in tales compiled from Anatolia regions such as Mardin, Sivas, Kastamonu, Aydın, Şırnak/İdil, Hatay (Antakya), Afyonkarahisar, Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman, Balıkesir, Burdur/Bucak and Konya/Ereğli. . Based on the information obtained, it has been seen that the needle generally comes to the fore in fairy tales with functions such as scaring, warning, punishing, protection against evil spirits or people, providing convenience in daily life (helping) and healing (healing). With these functional features, the needle has gained a symbolic quality in folk literature narratives and especially in fairy tales.
