The Provision of Social Services – from Institutionalization to Community Living

Summary/Abstract: Deinstitutionalization is the process of developing a range of services in the community, including prevention, with the goal of eliminating the need for institutional care. It is carried out on the basis of strategic international normative acts. The challenge in this process is to organize it to ensure that the new systems of care and support will respect the rights, dignity, needs and wishes of each person in need and guarantee their good quality of life. For the effectiveness of the process, the following are essential: the importance of the vision; the need to involve civil society; the need to include all stakeholders in the process and the crucial role of leadership in its implementation.
