Summary/Abstract: There is a widespread opinion that cannon were first used in the Ottoman Army at the Battle of Kosovo I. If we take this war as the beginning, it can be easily stated that the Ottoman Empire became one of the most important states of the period in cannon technology in a relatively short period of time. The Ottoman Empire, which maintained its superiority over its rivals in cannon technology until the 16th century, started to lose this superiority during the wars with Austria between 1593-1606. At this point, the Ottoman Empire, which displayed a very flexible attitude in the name of increasing the firepower of the army, focused on the production of many strategic materials within the borders of the country. One of the most important of these strategic materials was disposable gunpowder pouches, also referred to as hartuç pouches in military terminology. The use of cartridge not only prevented problems arising from the use of excess or deficient gunpowder during firing, but also ensured the continuity of firepower. In this study, the production phase of the cartridge between 1772 and 1838, the problems encountered during the production phase, the state’s search for solutions to these problems, and the areas where the cartridge was used extensively are discussed.
