Summary/Abstract: In Western Europe, old people represent a numerical force and have huge purchase and consumption potential and power. These are the main reasons why the old generation is courted by economic and political bodies, and is envied by the younger generations for the excessive security and comfort of their lives. But the generation gap and the decreasing birth rate are aspects that cannot be ignored in a society where the number of the active people supporting the old people is also decreasing. Frank Schirrmacher speaks of a Matusalemic conspiracy while in the political backstage of Berlin the age auction rises the retirement age to 70. Nevertheless the aging Europe is a reality. The author draws also a comparison with the life conditions of old people in Romania both under the communist regime and in the new democratic society.
