Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the translation agencies and their requirements imposed on translators. It explains how translation agencies operate and how translation process works in these agencies. The article also discusses translator’s competences based on the EMT framework. The empirical part explores the requirements imposed on translators by translation agencies. It aims at finding out what potential translators should know in order to meet the agencies’ criteria. In the end, the translators’ profile is created. Based on the research results, it can be stated that language knowledge is essential; however, translator’s general and specific knowledge is considered very important as well, together with computer skills and certain personal characteristics such as reliability and communicativeness. The aim of the article is to discover what type of knowledge, competences and skills should potential translators have so as to meet the translation agencies‘ requirements; and the development of what skills consequently needs to be incorporated into the curriculum and training of future translators.
