Archaisms in Croatian historical stylistics

Summary/Abstract: The opinion that every Croatian author of the period from the end of the 15th century to the end of the 18th century used only his native dialect in his works was challenged for the first time by Marcel Kušar. In the Vocabulary added to Marulić's Judita (Zagreb 1901) he marked several words as archaic or Old-Slavonic. Having introduced the notion of archaism into the study of the history of the Croatian literary language, M. Kušar initiated the stylistic analysis of the literary works written in that period. Examples from Siško Menčetić, Hanibal Lucić, Petar Zoranić, Ivan Gundulić and Tituš Brezovački show: a) that archaisms can be determined only from the point of time of each author; b) that they were taken from old Croatian literary heritage; c) that archaisms in their works are used for stylistic purposes.
