Summary/Abstract: The present study examines how the qualitative analysis of local microtoponymy can contribute to a better knowledge of the geographical, historical, social or economic realities within the rural settlements in general and those of the Bistra Valley (Bihor County, Romania) in particular. Most microtoponyms are originally appellatives, representing characteristics of the environment (relief, hydrography, flora, fauna) or specific activities. The results of toponymy and microtoponymy analysis should be used with caution and compared with the other documentary sources.
