Summary/Abstract: Attachment based on John Bowlby’s theory has greatly influenced the understanding of human development and its impact on mental health. Attachment is a deep-rooted process beginning in early childhood and continuing throughout lifespan. It determines the way we interact with others, the quality of close relationships, the regulation of emotions, coping mechanisms and the formation of internal working patterns which in turn influence mental health and well-being. This paper provides a summary of the main attachment styles, and also discusses its links to psychological health. Current research shows that people who have a secure attachment style build better interpersonal relationships and show lower levels of depression and anxiety. They are more likely to be emotionally resilient and have better self-esteem, which helps them cope with life’s challenges. At the same time, consequences of insecure attachment styles that are associated with fear and avoidance of intimacy are also considered. This gives rise to unhealthy relationships and thus the individual is at greater risk of developing anxiety, depression, and other psychological conditions. Lack of support and understanding in relationships can create significant strain and adverse conditions. In summary, attachment has a significant impact on mental health. The current research highlights the importance of this relationship and its potential in developing more effective intervention strategies for individuals with different attachment styles through which to promote overall mental well-being.
