Intercultural Initiatives. The Example of the Irish Public Sector

Summary/Abstract: The article presents selected efforts undertaken in the Irish public sector with a view to accommodating cultural diversity. These efforts at accommodation are closely connected to the migratory processes in the Irish society, and contribute to the general effort to integrate the immigrants and create an inclusive society. However, the results often exceed integration and prove useful in combating discrimination and racism, as well as supporting equal treatment. The article discusses the assumptions of the National Action Plan Against Racism as well as intercultural initiatives and strategies implemented (often within the framework of the Action Plan) in the Irish police force, healthcare and public transport services.
