Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the relationship between the dynamics of gender-role stereotypes in the Bulgarian family in relation to male-female roles and the manifestations of these attitudes in different age groups. The theoretical review proves the relationship between dominant stereotypes and normative attitudes towards gender, which are closely related and mutually supportive. Stereotypes are presupposed and simplistic notions of the typical behaviors, qualities, and roles associated with a particular gender; while gender beliefs, on the other hand, are more general and deeply rooted notions and values about biological and social sex. By conducting a quantitative and qualitative study throughout Bulgaria, major trends in changing attitudes towards roles in the Bulgarian family are identified, and their relationship to normative age periods and crises in Bulgarians is demonstrated. A comparative factor analysis is made between the different ages and the respective dominant stereotypes of Bulgarians of these age groups. It is proved that calendar age is statistically significant in determining gender-role stereotypes in the Bulgarian family. The paper concludes that the understanding of the biological and social role of gender is a dynamic variable that can be related both to the calendar age of individuals (and the corresponding normative age crises) and to dominant attitudes towards issues of power and socialization in the family. Finally, it is suggested that both the age of the potential beneficiaries and the risks in intergenerational relationships according to the type of family organization should be taken into account when planning policies in the area of adolescent rearing and education.
