Summary/Abstract: Being mislabeled, Fantasy literature for children could remain in the realm of the possible only in the children's imagination, whereas the Fantasy novel proposes a type of experience of otherness in which the specific escape is that of delimitation or even of dis-limitation from the totalizing and totalitarian uniformization of the same. The radical exteriority that opens towards transcendence in the unique experiences of the characters in the 20th century Fantasy novel frees the child (and a whole world along with him) from the totalitarian experience of the identical, of submission to predefined and predestined forms in which both freedom and the possibility of symbolization are annulled, other than through the demultiplication of selves as in the shards of mirror that reproduce ad infinitum the illusion of existence and perpetuate suffering. The heroes are orphans, physically and emotionally abused by their natural parents or step-parents, deprived of the freedom of expression, deprived of the possibility of assuming their real identity, marginalized, misunderstood, ridiculed. When they decide to take their destiny into their own hands, they cast off all the cords of apparent security of their environment and set off on the adventure of their lives, from where they will either return triumphant, purified, strong, or remain in the spaces where they find themselves and where they know understanding, respect and a sense of belonging, not just tolerated status. Sometimes the child who goes on an adventure geographically mapped on a real or imaginary map or travels in a dream space does not understand the attitude of family members who are either overprotective or dismissive, or communication is not assertive at all. Although the characters have their own individuality, the roots of fantasy literature are clearly in mythology.
