Summary/Abstract: Education for the hearing-impaired has been taking place in Ljubljana for 123 years. The first education for the hearing-impaired dates back to the 19th century when the first educational institution was opened in Gorizia in 1840. A significant step forward was the establishment of the Deaf-Mute Institution in Ljubljana in 1900, also known as the Deaf-Mute Centre. This operated under different names. In 1966, a new institute was built, which, since 1997, has been called the Ljubljana Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ZGNL). Today, the Institute runs a kindergarten, a primary school, a secondary school, the Fran Grm student hostel, a health unit, and a mobile service. The school offers 19 vocational courses. Various professionals have an individual approach to the young people attending the ZGNL, encouraging them to achieve great academic success and to integrate successfully into everyday life.
