Summary/Abstract: In the early 2010s, book fairs in Kyiv were sporadic and modest, often featuring self-published authors and a mix of Ukrainian and Russian-language books. Fast forward to October 2024, the “Fundament. Stories about Culture” festival in the Ukrainian House marked a significant evolution, emphasizing curated narratives and public participation. Curators Bogdana Neborak and Anastasia Yevdokimova transformed the event into an artistic experience, with a central atrium for discussions and an improvised library designed by artist Katya Libkind. The festival highlighted non-fiction about culture published during the full-scale invasion, reflecting the genre’s appeal to the middle class and its role in fostering critical thinking. Exhibitions honored the 1920s cultural renaissance and the 1990s contributions of Solomiya Pavlychko, showcasing her impact on modern Ukrainian humanities. The festival’s slogan, “It’s time to read deeper,” encapsulated its mission to continue the cultural work of past luminaries, despite ongoing challenges in Ukraine’s cultural policy and publishing industry.
