Summary/Abstract: The first evidence of the presence of Jews in Bulgaria dates back to the 2nd century on a tombstone near the village of Gigen, Pleven region. In Bulgarian lands, they lived mainly in the big cities - Sofia, Plovdiv, Ruse, Burgas, and today the largest and most compact group lives in the capital. In "Notes on Bulgaria and the Bulgarians" from 1874, Lyuben Karavelov mentions that they are honest, hardworking people, help each other and respect everyone with high morals, show loyalty to their fellow citizens, a strong sense of family, loyalty to each other, Christian virtues that they passed down through generations for complete harmony in the community.
