Summary/Abstract: The year when the poet Vasile Alecsandri died, the former mayor of the city of Iași, Vasile Pogor, proposed the building of a statue to honour the memory of the first Romanian poet awarded with an international literary prize. Once the proposal was accepted and approved by the local administration, it passed through various stages until it was completed, the most difficult one being the collection of the necessary funds. The City Hall of Iasi requested the similar institution of the country as well as other institutions and private persons, to donate money for collecting the necessary 30,000 lei, that included the costs with the statue, the pedestal and the foundation. Braila (the city and the county) contributed twice to this initiative.
