Summary/Abstract: The inter-korean war left a social and identity trauma throughout the Korean peninsula. This is why a first direct, official contact between North and South had been possible only in 1971, as some rounds of discussions between Red Cross delegates. Even though tensions between North and South were still quite strong, and the humanitarian dialogue, through the Red Cross, focused on solving the situation of separated families, seemed to be a too soft approach, this first dialogue also opened the premises for an interesting political dialogue. Therefore, in this article, we will focus on the factors that contributed to start this direct dialogue in 1971, on the contents of the meetings, and also on firsts achievements and failures, until 1973, when the dialogue had been stopped.
