Summary/Abstract: During the early childhood the unfavourable conditions of upbringing can lead to significant deviations of the normal physical and psychological growth of the children. In this respect the children, brought up in institutions without their parents’ care, are especially vulnerable. The scientific interest in the problems of the children who have lived in the institutions appeared in the second half of the last century. Leading pediatricians, from the second half of 19th century and the 30s of the 20th century who were trying to analyze the reasons for the high mortality rate that existed in the children institutions, could feel although not very clear the connection between that rate and the conditions in which the children grew, the stimulation and their upbringing. According to the data of the public record office since the opening of the first home for children in Tsarigrad a lot of data has been accumulated showing that those homes have saved lots of children but at the same time they have been seriously criticized about the very high mortality rate and the hard life of those who have stayed alive.
