Significance and specificity of the work of the social worker with people with physical disabilities

Summary/Abstract: A research, held in 2008, focuses on the social workers’ views, opinions and estimtion of their direct work with disabled people, in particular, individuals with physical disabilities. Bearing in mind that the social worker is the basic and leading participant in the work with disabled people, the goal of this paper is to outline the preparation and the problems in this activity. A survey, conducted among 363 social workers, points out the views, opinions and estimation of the social workers regarding their activity. The results show that there is an increase of the requirements for the modern social worker’s professional duties. The multi-faceted range of clients is a trial for the social worker, the outstanding of which is the lack of appropriate architecture and suitable working environment; feminization of the profession and last but not least, low financial stimulation. The profession of the social worker requires common and at the same time multi-facted social basics which should point to the direction of the activities of each social worker notwithstanding who they work with and in what direction. The social workers must plan their work so that the individuals be integrated to the sociaty and encourage them to stimulation for taking part in the system of social, professional and cultural relations in the micro-environment. This suggests and impose a constant mastering of the skills for work through additional training like seminars, retraining courses and MA programmes.
