Summary/Abstract: HISTORY OF MEDICINE / The kinesetherapy in Bulgaria referred to till recently as remedial sports achieved significant successes during recent years. They are due to both its founders – Prof. Mateev and Prof. Mancheva and a large number of other scientists and specialists most of all specialists in kinesotherapy working in this field. Prof. Georgi Karaneshev has contributed quite a lot for the development of the kinesotherapy in Bulgaria. His contributions may be differentiated into to main directions: education of specialists and the establishment of a specialized health network for kinesotherapy and its introduction. In the sphere of preparation of specialists in kinesotherapy Prof. Karaneshev entered on a later stage of his activity. From 1965 to 1970 he is a lecturer in the Higher School for Physical Culture in the city of Leipzig (former German Democratic Republic). In 1970 he was appointed associated professor in the Higher Institute for Physical Culture (National Sport Academy) where for three consecutive he held a chair. During this period he contributed significantly for the development of the education in kinesotherapy. He took part in drawing up of the first collective textbook on kinesotherapy. This textbook is one of the main training aids of the students even now. Prof. Karaneshev introduced significant modifications in the syllabuses for the specialty introducing new subjects, medical terminology, such as kinesotherapy, etc. G. Karaneshev wrote 25 textbooks and manuals, some of them for first time in Bulgaria, such as labor therapy, health promotion, scientific issues of remedial sports, practical manual for remedial sports, track-and-field athletics for disabled persons. Under his recommendations and editorship a number of training aids for students in the separate fields of kinesotherapy has been written. The scientific papers and publications of Prof. Karaneshev outnumbered 100. He has been a director of studies also of 10 PhD students, 3 of them foreigners. He has been a reviewer of many theses, competitions and textbooks. One of the particular activities of Prof. Karaneshev was the promotion of kinesotherapy. In various popular publications he published a number of articles in the field of kinesotherapy and physical culture. The development of the kinesotherapy in Bulgaria is inextricably bound up with the name of Prof. Karaneshev and the mark he leaved will remind to the generation for that. For his activity for many years he was awarded according his merits with many state and public awards.
