Summary/Abstract: Dr. Parizov has written a poignant article on the problems of loneliness and solitude of elderly people. This is a vastly important problem, because elderly people for a sizable social and demographic category. The processes of ageing and old-age itself have numerous consequences for society as a whole. One of them is that the elderly people become dependent on the society, and sink into loneliness and solitude. Therefore, it is incumbent upon the society as a whole to deal with all the respective problems and to furnish all the complex efforts required to meet them. The social assistance system is a leading field of action in providing t he necessary care fir elderly people. Social assistance as such comprises measures to strengthen the social security of elderly people, particularly lonely people affected by various disorders having brought them to a state of conflict with their families and relatives. The social worker is the representative of society expected to show interest for the personality of the elderly person, to accentuate on the necessity and usefulness of his/her experience, thus stimulating in a surge of energy in the concerned elderly individual of he/she may become convinced of being useful to kin and friends. Dr. Parizov maintains the thesis that particular attention should be paid to the ways how to establish and maintain the contacts with elderly patients. He draws attention to t he fact that it is much preferable the first meetings between the elderly patient and the doctor and/or social worker to be conducted in an neutral style, until an individual approach is developed for the further contacts.
