Summary/Abstract: Based on the third and fourth waves of the Community Innovation Survey (CIS3 and CIS4) the paer presents the similarities and differences in innovation patterns among manufacturing firms operating in low and high technology industries in Poland, as compared to the European Union counterpartners. The analysis of innovation patterns involved firm innovation activity indicators, executed innovation strategies, and sources of knowledge - external versus internal to the firm, and tangible versus intangible. The paper shows that, firstly, external knowledge is very frequenly used in both low and high technology firms in Poland. External knowledge is more often used in Poland than in the incumbent EU countries' firms. Moreover, less frequent internal development of intangible knowledge in Poland is accompanied by differences in the frequency of use of various external innovation sources, including cooperation. Secondly, differences in innovation strategy (product versus process innovation) between firms of two types of industries are accompanied by differences in the frequency of use of various sources of knowledge. Thirdly, there are no significant differences in innovation patterns between Polish and the EU high technology firms. The paper concludes that R&D intensity as a criterion of typology of industries has a strong influence on the variance in innovation patterns between analyzed industries.
