Sources and barriers of persistence of innovation of Polish manufacturing companies

Summary/Abstract: This paper analyses persistence of innovation activities of Polish manufacturing firms in an unconventional way. Based on micro data over 2002-2004 and 2004-2006, it puts innovating firms into two categories: persistent innovators, which innovate continuously, and occasional innovators, which innovate irregularly. Next, a comparison between the two groups is made. The paper shows that there is a considerable technological gap between the two groups of firms. It reflects the difference in the innovation resources endowment, the intensity of the use of innovation networks and market information on innovation, and the types of barriers they face. Persistent innovators face revealed barriers of innovation, which shows some weaknesses of their innovation process. Occasional innovators are facing deterred barriers which prevent them from innovating.
