Summary/Abstract: The author discusses a variety of semiotic approaches to literature. The first three studies (considered in the paper) take Greimas as their starting point: Fredric Jameson historicizing his basic pattern, Everaert-Desmedt accepting Greimas without reservations, while Angelika Sparmacher is sceptical about the universal applicability of his semiotics. Robert Scholes offers a more eclectic version of semiotics applied to literature, willie Eco's deliberations are based on the philosophy of language of Ch. S. Peirce. The relationship between semiotics anu literature is far from clear-cut which makes the uncertain concerning the value and perspective of semiotic research.
