Dislocation as literary procedure

Summary/Abstract: The author claims that one of the most frequent literary procedures in the presentation of a character is the dislocation of the character from his familiar setting which contributes to the revelation of the character's latent features, of his hidden dispositions and propensities. It is the new and largely unfamiliar setting that brings to light the character's traits that would otherwise remain unknown. The author express es his indebtedness to the Russian Formalists and their concept of defamiliarization as well as to the New Critics who spoke of paradox and irony, but he claims that the proposed thesis on dislocation is not identical with these concepts. Dislocation can be carried out in numerous ways but what the procedure has in common is the removal of the character from the (seemingly) unquestioned framework of ideals and standards. Thus the character is often placed into a foreign and alien culture or he returns to his native country after a long absence. The effect is in either case a new vision and a much better opportunity for selfscrutiny. We can see another type of dislocation when the character is faced with an unexpected turn of events which suddenly brings into question the very basis of his previous existence. The author also deals with the parallelly structured novel which he considers ideal tor the second type of dislocation. Thus in Don Quixote the parallel contrast between the two main characters contributes powerfully towards polarization and movement towards extreme positions. Sometimes dislocation is the result of an entirely subjective change or shock without any external or physical stimulus. Finally the author tries to answer possible criticism to the effect that dis location can be hardly distinguished from any other development in the plot and he draws a line of difference between dislocation and average action in a literary work.
