Summary/Abstract: After Itamas Even-Zohar's theory of dynamic functionalism it is the function (and not the formal features of a literary phenomenon) that is of decisive importance in critical assessment. Moreover, literature should be viewed as a system within a network of related systems. This system is exposed to change resulting from the rivalry of heterogeneous forces which means that criticism should not be limited to the analysis of the literary text only but must include a wider framework of factors taking part in literary production Even-Zohar feels indebted to the Russian Formalists rather than to the French structuralists who, he claims, have eliminated history from their theries.
