Developing Writing Skills to Engineering Students

Summary/Abstract: Our paper deals with teaching writing skills to engineering students of 1 Decembrie 1918 University of Alba Iulia and is based on the assumption that the writing process is an important one and represents an important component in one`s professional activity. Engineers`writing needs differ from those of other professionals, therefore the teacher has to carefully diagnose students`needs and adjust the syllabus as well as the teaching methods in order to respond to these needs. Before starting teaching, the teacher must check the students`command of standard writing skills, their fluency, their good knowledge of specialized language and their lexical accuracy. The use of authentic materials during the class helps students get familiar with standard writing assignments and also during the production stage. The teacher`s role is to teach students how to prioritize their activities, to pay attention to their needs and purpose, to guide students`production of written assignments as well as to remediate writing deficiencies by conducting follow-up activities.
