Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the status of freedom of expression in the region immediately before and after the outbreak of the so-called. Arab spring. It notes the critical role of the media and journalists and unpreparedness of Western elites to the new situation and points to their responsibility for ignoring the reports by human rights organizations about the real situation in this part of the world. The possible solution to improve the situation indicates Sana‘a Declaration, but also the expansion of independent media, particularly television station Al-Jazeera with a clearly positive impact on awareness of the local population.
