Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to summarize history of the lyrics in Czechoslovak beat music in late 1950´s and during the 1960's. Our singers were used to use English at the beginning and the first attempts to present Czech lyrics were unsuccessfull. The main problem was that there were not so many short and monosyllable words in Czech asi in the English. In addiction, English was very popular because the beat fans in Czechoslovakia considered it as a protest against the communist regime. However, it turned out in a couple of years that Czech language was able to express beat rhythm as well as English and the fans realised that it was much better to understand really what was singing about than to pretend knowledge of English. There were interesting beat lyrics written by Eduard Krečmar, Pavel Chrastina and especially by Josef Kainar who demonstrated that beat lyrics could be the highest quality. Unfortunatelly, at the beginning of 1970's Czechoslovak pop music started to be influenced by the politics and the level of lyrics went down.
