Rome and the Roman Empire in the Romanian culture (XVII th - beginning of the XIX th century)

Summary/Abstract: Starting from the romanity of the Romanians, a powerful idea of our entire history, the author of this study analyses the manner how the image of Rome and her empire, made up in the Romanian culture of the XVII, XVIII and the beginning of the XIX centuries contributed to its own consolidation and argumentation. For this, the works of the most outstanding exponents of the Romanian culture of the epoch are approached, such as Mihail Moxa, Grigore Ureche, Miron Costin, Dimitrie Cantemir, the spatharus Nicolae Milescu, the high steward Constantin Cantacuzino, Samuil Micu, Gheorghe Şincai, Petru Maior, Gheorghe Asachi, and Naum Râmniceanu. For all these men of culture, the proof of the romanity of the Romanians couldn’t have been made outside the history of Rome and of her empire. Thus can be explained the numerous information about the history and the civilization of Rome that one encounters in their works, information that consolidated the conscience of the romanity of our people and allowed its gradual transformation into a real national conscience. “Chiar de la începutul studiului nostru suntem obligaţi să arătăm că romanitatea românilor a reprezentat o idee forţă care a însoţit întreaga istorie a poporului nostru şi care l-a făcut să manifeste un interes deosebit pentru pământul de unde au venit o parte din strămoşii săi, pentru istoria Romei şi a romanilor,pentru descendenţii lor italieni. Este demonstrat şi evident pentru oricine că românii şi-au luat de la Roma originea, numele, limba, religia şi multe alte lucruri1. Ideea romanităţii românilor este în primul rând ideea despre descendenţa românilor din coloniştii romani transplantaţi în Dacia Romană;de aici decurge logic o serie de idei înrudite şi adiacente, dar care fac parte din ansamblul categoriei istorice de romanitate a românilor.
